New Painting: Byzantine Blues

"Byzantine Blues" is one of my recent series of small paintings, just 11 x 14 inches.  It's one of those paintings whose name seemed to arise out of the ether as I finished it.  While my title does not really fit the definition of Byzantine, I still like it for this work.  Since it's my painting, I guess I can call it whatever I wish!  One of the added joys of making art is the freedom to associate ones image with words and name it thus. That is, to see an image in your own unique way.  
The viewer too, is called upon to see whatever he or she wishes, and that is the freedom that is inherent in the ambiguity and mystery of abstract art.  Although the bottom line is that titles are not at all necessary to the visual experience, especially of abstraction, and may even detract from the viewer's freedom to see it in his or her own way.
Dictionary.com defines "Byzantine" as follows:
4. Fine Arts . pertaining to or designating the style of the fine or decorative arts developed and elaborated in the Byzantine Empire and its provinces: characterized chiefly by an ecclesiastically prescribed iconography, highly formal structure, severe confinement of pictorial space to a shallow depth, and the use of rich, often sumptuous color.

You can see that this painting does not resemble the "ecclesiastically prescribed iconography," of Byzantine Art at all, although the confinement of pictorial space to a shallow depth and the use of rich color, may apply.

Although I appreciate the beautifully rendered realism of masters such as Da Vinci or John Singer Sargent, my preferred style of painting is abstract.  What is your favorite style, when it comes to making or appreciating art?

This piece started from a creepy Victorian post card. I later made that into a photoshop collage, they they so amused me I couldn't resist painting them.

Big Brush, more paint and water, More Fun!

Been splashing water and paint everywhere. This rose is 12 x 16. Largest watercolor I've done this year. Maybe the most fun, too. Won't see roses blooming again until late spring, this one will last at least until then.

Busy Days

I've been fiddling around with my NEW Etsy Shop. I decided to change the name of my shop. I'm trying to re-brand my work with my own name instead of wickeddollz. There's a soft pron site using that name and I'm getting tired of emails asking me if such & such a model is going to be featured. snerk.

My daughters been home sick, but I haven't been called in for work at the jobby job yet this week so thats a relief. It;s also afforded me the time to actually work on all this stuff.

This was fun. My shoes are part of my Identity. I'm enjoying looking at everyone's view of themselves. :D

If you follow my blog you'll also have seen my Lil' monsters :D I'm hoping to have these crazy little characters ready for Etsy, or possibly Ebay, (Ebay.ca is having a 5 cent listing day today. But I'm not sure if I can get it together to list them :/ ) I'm having fun with them too



I also continued the ZOMBIE CHICKEN joke thats been going on over at the EBSQ forum ( sorry the jokes in the members section) with a quick photoshop zombified chicken


SO I'll be around today. Hopefully making and listing more art, generally taking care of a sick and drink far too much coffee.

Not Quite Ready...

The days are shorter and the kids are back to school. The nights are cooler and leaves are already falling off the oaks in my yard. I know what's coming but I am not quite ready fall, just yet.
Just hanging on to the last blooms a little while longer.

It was a warm Spring day when I exited the train station in Venice and realized how different, exciting and fun this trip would be! Sadly, most of my slides from this trip are missing.
I stumbled across a tube of Venetian red...so here we are!

Summer's Where?

We had three or four days of sun with temps in the 90s, I remember them well. Just last weekend the AC was a necessity. Now the heat comes on and it's in the 50s. I really enjoy warm summer nights. These dunes remind me of the Lake Ontario shore I visited each summer as a child. Able to stay up later because school was out, we'd play in the dunes until the sun set.

Why not live where you can take advantage of nice weather?
Lovely little town, in the Abacos, the only motorized vehicles allowed are golf carts.
Notice the scenery isn't marred with power poles and street lights. Property can be pricey but many homes are available to rent for a day, a week or a month.
Bring your scuba gear, your snorkle and if you can, come over in your boat.

This little watercolor is an Art Card or ACEO measuring only 2.5 x 3.5 inches. There's quite a bit of real estate in this small space. You can see this painting and a few others at my Etsy store.

It's Been A While!

Being an artist in the midst of today's technology can certainly be a challenge!

While the resources for exposure are almost endless on the internet it can also be an all-consuming task to maintain your online presence.

It's been a while since I posted anything here on my blog and today I would like to share this new piece entitled "Family Ties".

When I originally painted this one, I just wasn't sure...you know how we artists are, we can never decide if we like something or not and we are way too hard on ourselves. How many pieces have you painted over and had someone come to you and ask where it is?...too late...ooops! We can never get it back once it's gone!

Anyway, I didn't do that and "it is what it is". I knew that I did love the simple "rawness" of it and it has since received some wonderful, positive feedback from fellow artists, which is always good.

As artists we must learn to always go with our gut instinct.

Fire and Water

Like many people, I am fascinated by small and fleeting phenomena. Snow crystals on the window pane, the textures of water as it flows over pebbles in a crystal-clear stream, patterns of foam at seaside or patterns in licks of hearthflame--fleeting moments of nature, the elements in their changing forms, whose shape, texture, and shimmer evoke elemental and eternal things beyond our ability to comprehend. Science may illuminate the mechanism, but not the mystery, of nature's cycles. This painting is acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas, 24 x 36 inches.
