Across The Road Watercolor & Ink Painting

This is my first plein air painting titled, "Across the Road". This scene is indeed just across the road from my home. What lies behind the trees is a wildlife park and small lake where we like to go picnic and fish. It is so beautiful and tranquil there! Spending time in this place has inspired many of my artworks and my writing.

There are a variety of animals in the park, especially birds. We see a lot of herons and sometimes they fly over here and land out back. When I was recuperating from surgery, I watched one out my window for quite awhile. It was a beautiful sight and made me feel so uplifted.

Coyotes also wander over here from the park, usually late at night, and I've seen a wolf or two! Seeing them just yards away inspired me to create a coyote/wolf series of digital art works awhile back. This area is an abundance of natural resources that I treasure.

This painting is 12 x 9-inches and is for sale in my Etsy shop.

Find YOUR Jungian Archetype II

According to Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, archetypes are innate universal psychic dispositions that form the substrate from which the basic themes of human life emerge. Being universal and innate, their influence can be detected in the form of myths, symbols, rituals and instincts of human beings. Archetypes are components of the collective unconscious and serve to organize, direct and inform human thought and behavior.

An original abstract expressionist painting inspired by Carl Jung. In my previous career as a psychiatric RN I worked with a well known psychiatrist who lived and breathed Carl Jung. I find my previous work still heavily influences my paintings

New Watercolor & Ink Paintings

The 2 watercolor and ink paintings shown above are the first 2 in a SPRING SERIES of small format paintings I'm currently working on. The blue and yellow one is slightly abstract in that I dropped blue watercolor into the flower centers and just let it run where it wanted to run. These 2 paintings are affordable OOAK original paintings, measuring 4-3/4" x 5-3/4" each.

This next watercolor depicts a Callicore Neglecta Butterfly in the center of a blooming bunch of flowers....maybe in your flower garden? :) It's also for sale in my Etsy shop. Measures 15" x 11"...a large watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb. cold press paper. (the 2 smaller paintings are painted on the same type of paper.)

Green Llama

I'm doing chores for my neighbor while she's in Mexico. Part of chores, is visiting with the animals, and this critter is one we talk to. Kind of like Dr Doolittle!

There are baby goats in the pen with this llama, he knows his job is to guard those goats, if we get close, he gurgles and wiggles his lips, I know he wants to spit at us. So far, he's resisted! But even though I don't trust him, I love his haughty looking face. So had to paint him.

I painted a green horse for St Pat's day, and started this llama the same day, so he's kind of green too! This painting is 16X20 inches. Email me if you want this painting, montanaphoto@3riversdbs.net

Real Egg Shells Mosaic Photo Mat

I've worked with real egg shells a few times. I enjoy the texture they add to an art work. Awhile back I used the egg shells as leaves for an india ink tree on notecards. I also covered an Altered Book spine with egg shell pieces and painted it a glossy black for an interesting texture on the book's cover design.

This is a one of a kind hand-cut photo mat from 140 lb. watercolor paper. Designed with REAL broken egg shell pieces then painted with watercolors in monochromatic blue hues.

Measures 6 x 4-1/2-inches. 2-1/2 x 3-1/2-inch picture opening. Mod Podge sealed for long term durability.

This is a OOAK mat. I will not make another just like it...though some may be similar in design. For sale in my Etsy shop that offers less expensive arts and crafts:

Broke out the Watercolors

Boy, it's been about 1 1/2 - 2 years since I last used my watercolors. I've done some in the past, some I even really liked, but was never real comfortable or proficient with this medium.
Yesturday I got out my reference photos, found pictures of an Indigo Bunting and apple blossoms. I've been wanting to paint with wc for a while now, and have been inspired by other artists' work, especially bird paintings. So, here's my first try. I like the flowers, but the bird rather sucks.
Then I decided to try one that I had a detailed reference of, and did just the bird. It's an indigo bunting...he kinda looks hairy and am not thrilled to say the least. But better than the first.
Last night I brought up Youtube.com and searched for watercolor painting demonstrations and watercolor painting lessons. I found a bunch and marked quite a few as favs. I think that really helped.
So this morning I couldn't wait until I could paint, and I did this one.
This one is of a bluebird (reference photo by Pat Otten) and I liked how he turned out. So I added the fence post, the background, the grass and hint of flowers. This one I really like.

I'm thinking I will call it Bluebird Song

The Lady Amber

I just had to share this work with you-she is a commissioned work,so not available, but was just completed this week and I almost wish now I could keep her with me a little longer!
This is The Lady Amber. A fiber art doll, one of a kind around 13" tall in her (permanent) seated position. Textile work is a long and often fiddly process and I have had to put her aside at times to create other things,so the journey has been a couple of months from start to end, but I am pleased with the result!
Further 'in progress' shots can be seen HERE if you would like a more detailed view of her journey!

I Love to Create Customize Pieces!

I have a great imagination, if I do say so myself. I try not to mimic trends and fashions and create pieces that are true to myself. I would never create a necklace that will fall out of style in three months...I hope and believe my work extends itself through the quarrels of time.

Which is why I am excited to share a few custom orders I've completed over the last few months. I've had simple requests and tried to create pieces to suit their needs and wants. Every customer enjoyed them - which is really what makes me SO excited!!!

Love the Lighthouse:
5x7" frame with 3-D embellishments and real shells

"Hi Staci!! Just want to let you know how much E---n loves his picture frame!!! He has it sitting next to his bed. He LOVES it!! Thanks again!!" --Lori

Trees & More Trees:
4x6" frame with real twigs and "angel" leaves.

"...the...picture frame [was] extra special. Thank you!!!" --Ryan

Peter Rabbit: 5x7" frame, mixed media.

"I love this! Thank you so much for the wonderful frame. :)" --Lynda

Take it from me, customized work is fun, rewarding, and personal and in the end a meaningful piece of art to remember for a lifetime. Contact me anytime - maybe, our imaginations can come up with something wonderful!

Time to Create

It's funny, but it seems like I spend all my time on the computer and very little time painting. So my goal is, when it's time to create, I will just walk away from what I am doing and paint.

I've been wanting to do a bird aceo for a quest for my DAWG group (Designing Artists Women Group). So Finally, I went downstiars to look through my reference photos, got out the watercolor pencils and colored pencils and this is what I came up with.

I call it Blue Parakeet aceo.

When I was little we had a green parakeet like this, his name was Chippers, and I swear he taught me to whistle. I was probably about 5 and was trying to learn to whistle. So I sat infront of Chippers cage, he whistled all the time, and I practiced and tried until I finally did whistle. So my parakeet taught me to whistle, and no one will convince me otherwise.

He also was a little escape artist. I remember coming home from church and finding him flying around the house. We had to put a twist tie on his cage door so he couldn't do that anymore. He loved my mom. We had a huge mirror hanging over the stiars, and he liked to sit on that. He also loved cheetos, ya, I know it probably wasn't good for him, but this was in the early 70's, who knew?

Lightly glazed with a semi gloss professional artists varnish to protect and seal, the sides are also fully painted and collaged so this fascinatingly textural piece is ready to hang without the need for a frame ( or of course can still be framed should you choose to do so!)
A very characterful and textured work, deeply layered and richly colourful, this would make an interesting addition to any art collection!

Sculpting Mortimer Birds

I worked on another bird sculpture today. I've dubbed these birds, "Mortimer Birds". They are inspired by a watercolor painting I did a few weeks ago....Mortimer is the name I gave the bird in the painting when it first inspired me to write some children's stories about this funky little bird. (I haven't finished the stories yet.)

So since I'd rather be doing art than writing, I sculpted a Mortimer bird and put him in an assemblage piece (posted here previously). He turned out so cute (cuter in person that he is in the pics), I decided to do more, in a more simple sculpture than the assemblage piece was.

The pics shown here are today's work in the studio....this Mortimer Bird was sculpted and baked, his legs were woodburned, the base was sculpted and baked. I'll paint him tomorrow and varnish the legs.

Mortimer Birds will be available on my website or in my Etsy shop soon. I do have a sculpted bird without the striped legs in my Etsy shop right now though if you're interested. Mortimer Birds are the style shown here, with the woodburned bamboo striped long legs.

UPDATED 3-4-09: Here's one of the finished Mortimer Birds. It is now listed in my Etsy shop!
