Folk Art Eclipse Painting

Sweet Nymph

This painting is mixed media and is entitled 'Sweet Nymph'. It was created on block gallery wrapped block canvas (staple free sides) which has been collaged, painted and layered with hand dyed papers, acrylics and oil pastel.
Lightly glazed with a semi gloss professional artists varnish to protect and seal, the sides are fully painted so this piece is ready to hang without the need for a frame ( or of course can still be framed should you choose to do so!)

A very characterful and textured work, deeply layered and richly colourful, this would make an interesting addition to any art collection!

Fall Wouldn't Be Complete with PUMPKINS!

I have been selling these adorable sets of Pumpkin People and Pumpkins for a few years now. I think I first came up with their design in 2000 or 2001. This is a mixed media hand-sculpted set. No two sets are alike, because I don't use molds. The tallest Pumpkin person is approximately 3-1/2 inches to 4-inches tall.

Each set comes with 4 Pumpkin People and 5 pumpkins. Each piece is hand-sculpted from polymer clay, baked, painted with quality acrylics and glazed.

After Halloween, use just the pumpkins if you wish, for Thanksgiving.

PLEASE NOTE: I can also sculpt just a set of pumpkins (any size). Contact me if interested.

Pumpkin People are FOR SALE on my website or in my Etsy shop!

One November Day

Medium: OILS on hardboard
Style:Expressionist
Dimensions: 5"x7"

This is one of a series of paintings I am working on. Each is in oils, most with impasto work added. I am attempting to subdue my palette to see where this may lead me. Lots of fun experimenting and pulling out colors I seldom use and mixing new combinations.

Stanley Park Lighthouse

I finished this painting tonight, although it started out as a quick exercise it turned out to take much longer than I though. The sky is my favourite part of this painting... the colours were kept simple (cerulean blue, titanium zinc white, and just a hint of alizarin crimson in the top part of the sky. My goal was to keep the brush strokes simple and loose to capture the more wispy clouds in the sky. I managed to do that.... but, as I tend to do, I tightened up on my brush strokes when I got to the lighthouse.

Copper King

"Copper King"

I spent some time in the mountains with my horse. I got up early each morning, just to see what she was doing and take some photos of her. The time was so peaceful, and so healing. This photo summed it all up for me, the beauty and serenity, strength and grace of a horse.

So many times, we go to catch our horse, and don't pay attention to the quiet scenes of beauty they create.

Email me if you'd like to order this photo. 8X10" prints are $40 and come with a double mat. Larger images, and images on canvas can be ordered on my Red Bubble site.

Moon Rabbit

"Moon Blossom Rabbit" Watercolor by Cat Mallard

I'm working on a series of paintings inspired by moon tales. This one is loosely based on tales of a rabbit in the moon in Asian folklore. In the actual story the rabbit is busy working. My bunny wanted to go for a little moonlit stroll :)

starry starry night purse

Hey I painted something today!

Well other than my pet portrait that I'm still working on I have done NOTHING this Summer

I got this exquisite purse from ... you guessed it the Auntie, but she had glued some ribbon & rhinestones on it, which left marks when I removed them SO I painted my version of my most favourite painting Van Gogh's "Starry Starry Night"

I think it turned out nice :D
Not sure if I'll keep it or sell it though.

Changing Seasons

I'm dreaming of cooler weather today... yesterday was way to hot to paint and today is not too much better, but it is a little cooler. I had a little fun with the background on this one, adding a little salt as the paint was drying to create nifty patterns.

AWAKENED

This is the first of a new series I am working on.A more subdued and earthy palette for me. I've had a leaning toward earthy greens, burnt sienna..rusty muted colors this past month. Now this is a real change for me. These new paintings are all abstract expressionist..inspired by dreams, the seasons and full moons.

Eagle photo, wildlife photo by Donna Ridgway.

Imagine what it's like, to stand beneath this huge eagle, while he stares down at you! I had that experience a few days ago and it was awesome! His talons are huge, his beak could tear you apart...but he looked at me until his curiosity was satisfied, then he flew away.

My Grandpa Allen used to have this exact look on his face! He was an old Scotsman with a hooked beak of a nose and I don't remember him smiling very often-his eyes were fierce too....

If you'd like to purchase this photo you can click my Photoworks storefront. Wildlife and Montana photos are available in different sizes to suit your taste and budget. Check the store often, I'm uploading photos as fast as I can.

Summer Sail

This was done using acrylic paints, the sailboat is a novelty fabric that I cut out and will be gluing on, right now it is just wet and stuck down for picture taking purposes..lol I did it on poster board since that is all I had available.
I started off finger painting, as you might be able to tell by the sky, all the movement in the water was mostly done with fingers too, also a thin brush, a toothpick and a Q-tip, as I added the motion strokes I smudged them a bit with my fingers too. Still want to add some small things to this, but didn't have any glue so will wait.
The poster board leaves a LOT to be desired so this one will have to be framed for sure.
Over all though I am pretty happy with this!

CHARMING aceo

Altered art style ACEO currently for sale in my ebay store -CLICK HERE- to visit!
Work includes layers of ink and glaze, with collaged papers and vintage image.

Original one of a kind, signed and dated on the reverse.

What are ACEOs???? ACEO is the acronym for "Art Cards Editions and Originals". An ACEO is a small piece of art that can be defined by it's convenient 2.5 x 3.5 inch size. (Standard trading card size)
ACEOs are VERY different from trading cards however, because they are CREATED and traded or sold by artists. All my ACEOs are absolute ORIGINAL pieces of art! (Some artists choose to sell prints of their work -'editions' )

ACEOs are created in any medium available in the art world. Artists are creating them in ALL kinds of styles and varieties. There are no rules limiting the artist, outside of the size dimensions. ACEOs can be framed, propped, used as bookmarks, grouped together in larger frames......use YOUR imagination! Trading Card notebooks, sleeves and holders can all be used to display them.

Babies Everywhere...Tiny Inspirations

There are two new babies in my life. One, a friends of ours just had a little, or should I say, huge baby. He has features from both his parents and I was very happy to see him and hold him in the hospital. His mother, a friend of mine, had a rough pregnancy and was ready to give birth nine months ago...but, surrounded by friends and family with her baby, she glowed.

The second, we just attended his Brit Milah or in Yiddish, his Bris on Friday. He is my cousins second child but first boy. My cousins were very proud of their new addition to the family as was my Great Aunt. Actually, she was a little too excited. When she asked when DH and I were going to have children, I put my arm around DH's neck and said, "Well, we've been trying to get pregnant, but DH just hasn't been able to." Everyone laughed and she left us alone. (PS...I find, when someone says something absurd to you and you respond with something absurd as well, they usually leave you alone.)

At any rate, I created some picture frames, thinking about the babies, and little ones in our lives, in the lives of my clients - recently one client asked me to create two picture frames for her Grand Nieces! I hope you enjoy my new offerings!
