The Metaphysics of Cloth - c Lynda Lehmann

This 9" x 12" watercolor reflects my fascination with finding beauty in the transient and accidental, such as the folds of a towel or laundry dropped on the floor, and resonates with my general love of texture and topography. I see texture as the most universal and ever-present level of form. This is one of my older paintings.

I have long been wanting to re-visit the idea of a series like this: many different, flowing and graceful configurations of cloth. I'm finding it really difficult to work towards all my goals, but I know that I'm fortunate to have a number of compelling creative interests (even if they drive me crazy!)

I haven't posted in more that two weeks, because we've been very busy with home-building and renovating projects, as we are each summer. And our daughter is getting married next week, so that is a real sea-change life event. I'm fighting the inclination to feel "very old!" I'm joyous for her, but also feeling a bit melancholy. Where have the years gone?

I hope you are all well, not feeling too uncomfortable with this summer heat, and finding time to pursue your passions. I hope to return to blogging more regularly in August. See you soon!

It's Been A While!

Being an artist in the midst of today's technology can certainly be a challenge!

While the resources for exposure are almost endless on the internet it can also be an all-consuming task to maintain your online presence.

It's been a while since I posted anything here on my blog and today I would like to share this new piece entitled "Family Ties".

When I originally painted this one, I just wasn't sure...you know how we artists are, we can never decide if we like something or not and we are way too hard on ourselves. How many pieces have you painted over and had someone come to you and ask where it is?...too late...ooops! We can never get it back once it's gone!

Anyway, I didn't do that and "it is what it is". I knew that I did love the simple "rawness" of it and it has since received some wonderful, positive feedback from fellow artists, which is always good.

As artists we must learn to always go with our gut instinct.

Festival

"Festival" is one of my recent paintings. It's an active and colorful abstract with an impasto surface, lighthearted and slightly humorous. Acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas, 36 x 30 inches. African Violet

This is one of my older works. The original abstract mixed media painting is on Arches paper, 12 x 16 inches. It's a stylized but delicately-shaded and textured rendering, with negative spaces that are important to the composition. I tried to convey the sensous unfolding of the pink petals. I used salt to create the textured areas, and a bit of Prismacolor pencil for the thin lines.Available as an archival print on canvas, at http://www.lyndalehmann.com/ .
