censorship

a little piece of performance art on censorship
I decided actually speaking would dilute the concept.
I'm not really naked, but many of my nude paintings have been censored so the imagery was important to me. I used quotes of people for more brilliant than I am , and chose the ones I felt best expressed my opinions.
The quotes come from: http://www.quotegarden.com/
The music comes from:http://ccmixter.org/files/mullion/2 1043

Cenizo in bloom!

The Cenizo is blooming! Cenizo, or Sagebrush is painted in oil, it's 9 inches tall by 12 inches wide, and still wet on the easel. I wanted to capture the wet look between the rains, with some of the dead grasses we have due to the drought.

Something for the garden

I've been working in my flower beds and getting things all pretty. I decided my garden needed a cardinal, so here he is. (I had a butterfly on flowers painted on this rock, but after the years it wore off, I like this one better.) I did the cardinal this past weekend.

This next one I did just tonight.

Yep, a tree frog. kinda a big tree frog. My hubby bought me a cute little birdbath with lily pads, and when I say little I mean it comes up to my knee only. Since it has lily pads, I thought the garden needed a frog. : ) ...Any guesses what I'll paint on a rock for my garden next???

Oh ya, see those acrylic bottles of paint behind the frog? These are the paints I used during my first year or more of painting. Good and cheap, but things definately needed more than one coat.

New accessories store on etsy!

I have decided to open a second etsy store, featuring my fiber/textile art accessories and jewellery items!
Please do visit there soon and take a peek ( comments welcome, bear in mind that it's still being added to so not all the stock is there yet!)
I have worked so hard and achieved some well earned success in designing and selling these pieces. I do not compromise myself and copy the work of others, as I believe there is room for everybody to do their own thing.Consequently I was REALLY upset to find that not just one,but now TWO of my previous customers have bought pieces from me in order to copy and sell for themselves - have these people no integrity? ( or originality, skill, imagination or shame for that matter?):(....sorry, I won't dwell on that, but cannot help but feel offended!
Anyways,the new store vividspirit.etsy.com
showcases my pieces beautifully, much better and still the original and BEST QUALITY accessories of this type-and of course,my original store will continue to be crammed full of mixed media and textile art as always! Take a peek now!

New ACEO Designs available now!

These are just a few of my latest ACEO creations currently available for sale-CLICK HERE to visit my store and view now!

Ten Random Things About Art Response

ights free music from http://www.incompetech.com/ again

This is my response to the "Ten Random Things About Art " I totally cheat by adding some 10a 10 b etc but then again it's my challenge and rule were meant to be broken :P Actually it was more becuase I had to distill mine down from 25 random things. it's a bit of a crap video, but what the hey. All the art work (except for the first piece which is by Margret Keane , a brilliant Big Eyed Artist, and the child painting, which was done by my daughter AND both are favourites of mine) are original piece by moi.
All my videos are free to use for anyone who wants, the only request is that you do not suggest that the art work is your own! OTHERWISE have fun!

sorry about the fumbling voice over.I never realized I had a speech impediment until I started hearing my own voice recorded!!

Opus No. 9

This is a new watercolor further exploring abstract.

The Bananaquit

This is a 9x12" colored pencil painting on watercolor paper of the Bananaquit, (following info from Wikipedia) : "The Bananaquit is a very small bird attaining an average length of 11 cm. It has a slender, curved bill, adapted to taking nectar from flowers. It sometimes pierces flowers from the side, taking the nectar without pollinating the plant. It cannot hover like a hummingbird, and must always perch while feeding. It will also eat fruit and insects. It often visits gardens and may become very tame."
According to Wikipedia the entire belly should be yellow, but the photo I used as a reference had this coloration.

"Starling"
Artist: Tracey R Gates
ACEO (2.5" x 3.5" trading card size)
Watercolor on 140# watercolor paper

This is one of many new trading card sized paintings I'll be doing with the subject, Wildlife in My Backyard. I tried to bring out the details of the gold markings of this dazzling bird. Similar to the few that build a nest over our back door every Spring.

The original painting is up for sale HERE for a limited time.

Four different ACEO (2.5 x 3.5" trading card size) was done with watercolor on 140lb watercolor paper. They are of woodpeckers eating suet in our backyard. The top two, numbered 1 and 2, are of the male woodpecker. The bottom two, numbered 3 and 4, are of the female.

All are for sale through my eBay shop, http://members.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=trgatesart

Bat girl Pin Up speed drawing photoshop work

could the tile BE more descriptive. This turned out to be waaay longer than I intended, not sure how helpful most of it is.The thing I try and remember in photoshop is to always work in layers and vary my strength of colour each time to build up a colour instead of applying straight pigment..um I guess thats what you'd call it in photoshop.
ANYWAY a beach babe pin-up devil girl at night with shrunken head, who could ask for anything more?

New Watercolor Flower aceo's

I created this little aceo (art cards editions and originals) a couple of days ago. I used salt for some effect (the white splotches). I had alot of fun creating it because it's way different from what I usually do. I decided to name it Raining Petals, mostly because that's what comes to mind when I look at it. I think it has a nice spring feel to it.
I will be puting it up for sale on my
etsy shop and also upload it to my website today (is the plan)
I also will be creating products with this image on at my
CafePress and Zazzle shops.
This one is similar to the other, I painted them at the same time. Basically, while I was waiting for one to dry, I would work on the other. It worked great. Felt like no waiting time.
This one I named Red Love Flower. Honestly I couldn't think of anything else except red flower, but then there's that upside down heart, so I threw the word 'love' in there. I think it works.
Again, you will be able to find this aceo painting for sale at my
etsy shop today or tomorrow, and you will soon be able to find this design on my Zazzle and CafePress shops.
I like posting my new stuff here first, that's why they aren't listed in my other shops, or even my
website yet. Hope you don't mind.

God Bless your day : )

Thought for the day: No matter how hard things get or how bad things look, I can always depend on and lean on Jesus to get me through. I don't have to take the burden of this world on my own shoulders. His shoulders are so much better equipped to carry it. Dwell on God instead of the problems.

Poppies!

Poppies is a newly listed oil painting available here in my Etsy store.

This piece measures 6 inches tall by 8 inches wide, oil on canvas panel.

Tawas Point Light

Sunday was a wonderful painting day because I also did this painting. It is from one of our lighthouse trips in Tawas, Michigan. The night before we saw this lighthouse, while we were checking into our motel room, hubby was getting our bags from the trunk (unfortunately I was already inside with the camera) and he saw a skunk kinda close to him in the parking lot. As it turns out there was a resident skunk that liked to hang out infront of the motel. I wanted a picture of it, but by the time Paul got back out there, it was gone. I really want to get a picture of a skunk...as long as we don't get skunked while doing it. : ) That would be BAD.

You can find this 6 1/2 x 6 1/2" watercolor painting on my website.
I will be listing it in my etsy shop soon, and I am working on designing products with this image on in both my CafePress and Zazzle shops.

Fabric Collage Album-new design!

This album was created using fabrics and papers with stitchery and vintage image embellishments. The style is very much grunge/shabby chic, with layers of yummy fabrics, many of them uniquely hand dyed by me, and papers, raw and torn edges and uncut threads-do not assume from this design style that it is loosely stitched however, it is firmly finished, and whilst designed to fray, the edges have been finished to prevent too much unravelling-it is very much designed to be handled!
The front cover has a beautiful butterfly,hand-transferred onto calico fabric and poetry quote, also delicately hand transferred onto fabric, all collaged together with lace and button embellishments. There are ten pages inside, (not including the front cover and back cover) all embellished with lace, fabric, vintage photos and embroidery, filled with loads of scrummy handmade tags, made using papers, beads, fibres and all manner of stitch and fabrics, tucked into pockets, the sweetest miniature embroidered fabric booklet ( see photos-embroidered 'Play,Live,Love ) , -and still plenty of space ready for you to add all your precious mementos, letters and photos to create a personal album!
Album is one of my larger designs, and measures ROUGHLY 8" square and approx 1-2" thick.
I'm not sure that my photos do it justice! It is hard to convey the textural appeal of these lovely fabric collages-this has to be one of my personal favourites so far!

Landscape painting

Ranch Road is an original oil painting.

©Jean Levert Hood

I painted this in a beautiful spring that gave us many wildflowers. It's so awesome when the fields are solid color! The grasses are just starting to turn green this year and we have precious few wildflowers. It's just been too dry.

This landscape measures 18 x 24 inches.

Did you know that my What's Going On In My Studio This Month feature has been updated 3 times this month? I have 3 "wet on the Easel" shots there. I'll be changing it to April soon, so check it out!
